Hey Folks, I'm posting a text version of my Garb Article here. If you need garb and aren't sure what's going on please read through this and ask questions!
Dagorhir Garb
Obviously many people don’t have all that much money and garb can often times be a large stumbling block for the up and coming Dagorhirram (Dagorhir participant). Don’t let garb get you down. There are many fun and affordable ways that you can make garb in Dagorhir without breaking the bank and stretching yourself to thin. Most of the pictures you see are often times of fighters who have been around and been amassing this closet of garb for years. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t have a set of clothes to fight in, two sets of court garb, and a party outfit it’s not necessary.
First:
Let’s start with the obvious, I’m not here to teach you how to make garb, I’m teaching you how to acquire the ability to have cheap and effective garb. So, there will be no patterns and only just estimates on what you need. So let’s get started.
Making Your own!
Making your own garb is fun and relatively easy to do especially if you know someone who is skilled at sewing. The first part of making garb (and sometimes the most expensive) is getting the patterns. Patterns can be purchased at Jo-Ann Fabrics anywhere from $2.00 on sale to $16.00 full price. But, what is better is ask for patterns. Most of us already have patterns that perhaps you could use.
The second step is to get the cloth. We do suggest to stay away from synthetic cloth because it does melt when near fire and can severely hurt you. Also, synthetics do not breathe as much on a hot battlefield. But, the upside to the synthetic revolution is that you can generally get it for 1-2 dollars a yard!
After you pick out your fabrics then you should start making. In general, the pants that we make require four yards of fabric and require a minor investment. You’ll also need some sort of elastic banding for the waist and the legs (sorry I don’t know the price for elastic off the top of my head) Shirts are also going to require about another 4 yards of fabric to make and again elastic for the banding at the arms if you are making a puffy sleeved shirt.
Overall making your own garb can be relatively cheap and easy. Really, it is just a matter of finding the time to sit down with a pattern pin and sew the fabric.
Purchasing Garb!
Ok, so maybe you don’t have any skill to actually make the garb, or maybe it’s a week before your first event! Well, when it comes down to pinches like this garb can be effectively purchased and gotten in many different ways. Wal*Mart one of the worlds most favorite institutions can help you leaps and bounds in this department, but don’t put Goodwill Stores Inc. out of your mind either. These are two places that you can find the necessary clothing that will pass as garb for relatively cheap. Remember, whatever you purchase at Goodwill Stores should be washed prior to wearing.
So lets start, you need some sort of pants right? Well, what works wonders are sweat pants. They breathe and move with you. Keep them in gray and black tones and everyone will be happy. Getting some sort of shirt? Well.. The shirt part is a bit harder to find. Buttons are often times out when it comes to shirts. Sweatshirts are allowed but we do discourage them because they do obviously look like a sweatshirt. Keep in mind that if you need to use this in a pinch then feel free to as long as they are good basic colors such as brown, gray and black.
What we have also found to work is you can go to usually Wal*Mart and purchase scrub pants and shirts for nursing and doctors. Keep in mind base colors when choosing a scrub outfit, because well… Let’s face it little doggies with bones and bowls that say Fido just won’t make the cut as garb.
For shoes this can be tricky, we do not like to see sneakers out on the field. But, knowing that everyone has at least 90 pairs of them we have come to terms with this and made it so that only black sneakers are permitted on the battlefield (NO CLEATS). Make sure they are not very flashy and bear little to no logos that are recognizable. Sketcher shoes and boots are also welcome on the field. Wal*Mart has a host of nice black shoes that mimic boots but are about 1/3 of the price.
Wrapping It up!
Great you’ve figured out what you want to do either making garb or buying it, but what do you need? Well, here is a list of clothing articles that are usually the most helpful at an event.
Shirt: Usually basic colors puffy shirts are recommended but basic shirts are allowed as well. No logos should be present on the shirt (at least no corporate logos). Two shirts are recommended but not needed.
Pants: Two pair of pants makes for nice times during battle one to fight in another to party in but that can’t always be the case. So black pants will work for all occasions here.
Belt: Get a good strapping belt, something that you can wrap around you nicely and will hold things like a side bag, mug, or sword! (Goodwill Stores sells belts that oftentimes work for Dagorhir at about .75 cents a belt! Woot cheap leather!)
Shoes: Black or brown shoes work, don’t discourage the sandal! Basic earth tone sandals work wonders too (be careful of your toes) but some people do fight barefoot.
Tabard: This cloth is draped over the shoulders with a hole for the head. It can be in any color you wish and it breaks up the shirt and pants nicely. These are suggested and are only about 2 yards of fabric to make.
Cloak: Although not needed this is recommended to have. It gets cold at night and a good cloak is always something that will keep you warm. Cloaks, however, can be the most expensive items in your wardrobe (unless you’re me and spend $30 on a vest). Cloaks are typically 14 full yards of fabric when it is 55-60” wide fabric, anything shorter than that will cause the cloak to need up to 17 yards of fabric total. Again, not needed, but these are very handy to have.
If you have any questions about garb or if there is something that I did not answer please contact me with them. Also, feel free to ASK FOR HELP. We have been doing this quite some time and we make garb a lot. We will help you make your garb, and we will help you pick out what is legal to wear and not. Don’t hesitate to ask for help that what we are here for. Thanks!
