Hey Folks, I know our realm mostly uses the same type of core for all of our swords or weapons... And some ideas are known between a few people. But if you know of any core that most people don't use or would like to discuss a specific type of core let's do just that!
Everyone knows we all have our lovely 1/2" fiberglass rod but there's also the thinner 3/8" which both have different benefits and drawbacks. For spears most of us use the 3/4" Bandshoppe Pole. Lots of people have been using some other stuff for core though. So let's talk, what's your fav core, why and what don't you or do you like about the others?
GO!
I added a poll... Forgot some of the choices, accidentally hit "enter" while putting in the answers. *sigh* Just go with the flow and still discuss.

Different core for different weapons and people, PVC core let;s me trigger my weapons, and it's cheap and easy to come by. The thinner cores make it lighter, but I sure as hell don't want a few certain people swinging my weapons around, I like them in one piece!

Depending on what type of weapon Im making is waht core i use... For my flails I like to use pvc because i think it has a bit more strength and wieght than the fiberglass; and i swing the flail pretty hard to get the desired effect out of it... but that'll can next time i make one.... for make axes and swords i like the 1/2" fiberglass just because its easier to get than the better kitesbar that people use... i would love to get my hands on some of that shit so i could really mess some poeple up...

I really have a feeling that the Kitesbar is nothing more than a laminated graphite core.... Just saying.... I'm thinking we might do some experimenting and see what we can come up with.

Ive heard a few people mention a site where you could buy a kit for sword making. Im not too sure about the site but i think it was like 30 bucks for the core and the foam and what not... i know Izad and myself were thinking about ordering a kit or two just see how they were...

in my experience, which is rather limited, pvc sucks for reds. my last greatsword broke at the hilt after only a few practices.

I realize I have very little experience but I really like the 1/2" or 3/8" fiberglass, my one sword is 3/8" fiberglass and the other is a tent pole (you can get 6 packs of replacement poles at Walmart for pretty cheap)

Edhellen is the site. But the problem is their weapons are actually too light when you first make them. You have to modify the sword for it to become dag legal. Nova's sword is from there, you have to add the cord wrap and some weights.
Tent poles would be ok. But you have to be careful with weight. And I've broken tons of tent poles in my day. Ask Lucius how easily tent poles break (we've duct taped his one pole together three events now).

I didn't want to hear that, and I am not asking him about any poles, his own or any one elses thank you.

Edhellen does make some quality stuff and alot of long time fighters swear by them but the site is REALLY expensive compared to what we're used to. The only benefit i've really come across for them is that the weapons don't break down much in winter and the low weight. i know i'm probly gonna stick to homemade stuff forever just because I'm cheap and i have alot of fun learning new ways to make it and to do so cheaply. I prefer our carpet tape and blue foam weapons anyway because they are so much easier to fix and materials are so easy to come by here in Maeth's outlands

as for core, i'm still not really sure of my fav between pvc and fiberglass because they both give me a good grip with amazing control. id have to go pvc just for the cost and the fact that it makes a sturdy blue

The reason edhellen's weapons stay together in the winter better than ours is specifically because of the DAP that they use and not the carpet tape. Carpet tape is great for summer but in the winter, if the sword isnt properly constructed it breaks down.

I always thought DAP would make the weapons hit harder for some reason.
