Rynnt, real weapons are frowned upon. Dag events tend to be filled with alcohol. Alcohol + weapons = bad things. If I were you I wouldn't wear a knife. Even if you wouldn't use it, people might complain. I think it's more of a hassle than it's worth.
I'm planning on leaving at 10:30 or 11:00 on Friday so that I can get there early and claim a campsite for us. I can fit one or two other people in my car, or a bunch of stuff. Can anyone go that early?

a knife people would have alot less problem with than say a sword, but really there is no need for one except possibly in camp. and because of problems that have occured with live steel, many camps, including maeth and urk kuldar, require that you remove any live steel or dag weapons at the gate and can collect them upon leaving. if its just a show off knife, not worth bringing as opposed to mason who actually uses his for various things instead of just for show. in general, if you bring a knife, save the trouble and leave it in your own tent

About the knife - what Lucius and Vors said, truth.
Next topic - i might not make it to Gates this year. it depends. My 16 year old cousin, with whom im very close to, has to have surgery. So if she has it around that time, im going to go visit with her and take care of her instead of going to Gates. My family are too important to me. But i will let everyone know 100% for sure before then.
Lucius - As far as when you are going down. I would love to get there that early as well. I can also meet you in Indiana and follow you down or you follow me, whatever. But the spot i would like to get is right behind our usual spot in amongst the trees. what do you think?

I'm not criticizing you guys for enforcing the rule, but I am criticizing the rule itself and the apparent need for it.

i think the weapon rule is dumb too but id rather have it and not get stabbed by someone who had a bit too much to drink

Rynnt you may bring weapons, but be warned people tend to 'find' them. (or take them right off of your belt depending on how drunk you are) Also if you do bring the knife be careful with it and adhere to the only rule that really specifies live steel:
1.4 - Forbidden Garments, Patterns/Logos, and Equipment - the intent of this rule is to maintain an appearance appropriate to a fantasy/medieval setting at Dagorhir events, and to ensure that players are not carrying real weapons onto the battlefield.
1.4.2 - Real swords or knives (even in sheaths or cases) may not be worn or carried during Dagorhir combat.
If you intend on using the knife as feast gear that would be bad ass, but other wise I really can't see a need for it to be out of a sheathe. Everyone and their mother has a blade at the larger event(s) (Ragnarok) that means farmers and farmer's mums got 'em. (I'll exalt the first person to recognize that quote thank you very much.)

Nova - No problem
Things have gone well and i WILL be going to Gates. I can probably be in Indiana in the morning on Friday the 23rd. But i would like to be at Pioneer Park around 11:30 or 11:45. This way we can be at Troll when it opens at 12:00 and get a good camping site. And the drive is about 1 hour from Indiana.
Right now I may have Cyrus riding with me. Im not positive yet but i will let everyone know so they know whether or not i will have room. I might be able to fit one more person other than Cyrus. So 3 of us total. (Including me) But that other person would have to be ready with all their stuff where ever i am meeting them. I don't like to do a lot of running around before i have to drive that far. But I'll keep everybody posted.

I understand the concern, but why is it not a problem at all in SCA, but people in Dag just can't seem to handle it. Are we saying that SCAdians are just more responsible than people in Dag? I don't think that that is true because there is an awful lot of crossover between the two groups. Then again, Nova mentioned that some people will try to take your weapons when drunk at night. I've only seen something like that happen once at an SCA event, and that person was quickly and without incident reprimanded. oh well, I think I've said my peace.

Yep, stolen right of your belt. Then again, if you get that far off I almost can't help but feel like it's your own fault in a way, but on the other hand... then what's the fun in the night life?
