They are. I think that PD is a pretty forgiving medium to work in. I would say with a little more practice I might be up to the level he is as far as the PD itself. The painting and foam sculpting though are what really make his pieces masterworks.

I'm bored when I'm not at work, so during this break I have made a saber, an axe, a kukri, and the broken cutlass. working on a small strap shield made entirely of blue foam. what make good straps for a poor young lad? emphasis on POOR.

Torn fabric, but if you can afford scissors you can cut it, D-rings (1-2 dollars for a set) will make the straps adjustable.

It makes it look more period. Oh, and the straps don't need to be adjustable, but there are plenty of ways to do that. Buckles, cut off the ends of a belt, d-rings, or just tie it to your arm. By the way, are you making a spiral core strap shield? dagorhir.com/gear/content/weapon_tutorials/spiral_shield.php

no, i saw that but it didn't look like it'd be sturdy. Mine's going to be about 20 inches long, maybe half as wide. 4 or 5 layers of foam. i'm going to cut the foam so the edges are rugged and uneven and cover it with brown fabric, then paint wood grain on it. The idea is that it's just a chunk of tree i put straps on. and it's so small so i can two-stick with it or use it with a red.

Oooh, I know that someone in... I think it was drentha, painted wood planks on their shield, it confused the shit out of me at first because he did a damn fine job.

nice! mine's either going to look really good or really crappy. I've never tried to paint woodgrain before, but i'm good at painting/drawing other stuff, so who knows.

This is unrelated to the weapons, but does anyone know how to sew a hood/cowl? I have a cloak but it doesn't have a hood because there wasn't enough fabric. I saw some online but i don't feel like paying $15 for one when I can make my own for like $0.60. And i'd really like to have one so the exposed part of my ear doesn't freeze off at winter event (i have latex elf ears for the top half :-D).

Basically two squares sewn together for the back an top, the front is open, and the bottom is sewn to the cloak.
I can help you sew it it you need me to.

i have a very thin hood you can have but you would probly want something thicker.
i cant wait to see the new weapons. the main sword of my buster sword is done and just needs final taping and a cover. if i get it done in time i plan to test it at Drentha then bring it to Maeth
there is a guy in Lothlorien who made his shield look like wooden planks with a metal rim by working different colored fabric around the foam

ok, i can't even sketch decent wood grain. hahaha. i now might try to carve the shield and paint the cover to look like a birch leaf, since it's the most shield-shaped. does anyone have any other ideas for a slightly unusual shield shape? i'm not trying to be a non-conformist, i just don't want my shield to look like everyone elses. :-P

we have artists in maeth who you might be able to convince, pay, blackmail, etc into doing a wood pattern for you. for my one shield i just got material that looked like bark. now i have an idea for an epic shield that needs funding. someone help out a poor artist and i'll give you the shield. i think i'm gonna start having people buy materials for me to build epic things for them. not really ordering weapons, though im more than willing to make custom orders, just getting to make dagorhir art without me paying for it and not having to have it all in my room

ooooh. i like the bark-patterned cloth idea. i'll have to see if walmart, jo-ann's, or michael's has anything like that. what's this epic shield design of yours?
