If you didn't get the plastic barrel part you take a barrel. cut your shield core shape that you want... ie rectangle place holes across the top and bottom of the shield
comme ci: |-.-.-.-.-.-| where the "."'s are the holes and the "-" is the top of the shield.
Then you place a fiberglass rod on the inside of the shield and wrap a telephone cable or any type of high tension cord around the fiberglass rod through the holes in a spiral (cant make ascii art of that) and it will straighten the curve of the shield.
You do it to the top and the bottom and it will make the shield instead of the slight "U" curve they have from the barrels to a nice flat --- (or line if you like). Actually... upon re-examining my little ASCII friends the shape of a shield is more of "(" rather than a "U" unless it's Izad's shield.... Then it resembles "taco" (just picture a taco in your head).
Ok i'm done.

well, you could always go with plexiglass like I did but you gotta have the strength to put behind it. problem is that its also expensive but makes for a sturdy shield that can move a shield wall

The guys from Dubois had a great idea for their shields. I'm going to build probably two this week and see how they hold up at practice this weekend. They use a thin plywood (the really thin kind) and it seems like two pieces of the more industrial strength cardboard (the thicker cardboard like from walmart bins and things).
Smash those together with a strap and then foam it. Their shields seemd to hold up pretty well!

That is exactly something I was thinking of doing for a rather large shield, how light was it?

They were light! thirty inches across and I'd venture to say lighter than my shield! They seemed to hold up well too. I was very impressed with the design.
Mero: You'd cut out the center hole of the shield and do one of a few things...
Pie pan onto wood (that gives you a bit of a boss). Also you could just cut it out and then foam it up, some people put extra foam on the top layer where their hand is under. (not recommended imho)
You could build up your handle fro the back of the shield (but i'd not recommend that either it would snap off easier).
My suggestion would be just something with a curve thats hard and you could fix to the center of the shield and not worry about it coming off.

Yeah, that's why i suggested the pie pan or small bowl of some sort. As long as it secure, and not pointy stuff through the foam (two layers on top) then you're good. Shields (as of now) are still allowed metal cores.
